What is a Clothing Boutique?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a boutique and a retail store? It’s not a silly question!

First of all, when it comes to retail clothing stores, there are two basic types: retail stores that sell only one clothing brand, and retail stores that sell clothing from a variety of manufacturers. For example, Nike has a retail store in the Mall of America where they only sell Nike products, but you can also buy Nike products at retail stores like Kohl’s or Foot Locker.

A clothing boutique actually is a type of retail store, in that it stocks inventory from a variety of brands. But there are some key characteristics that make shopping at a women’s clothing boutique like Kudos a unique experience...

Clothing boutiques stock a curated collection of inventory.

Boutique owners personally choose the clothing that goes into their stores, focusing on styles and brands that fit their shop’s niche and local audience. This is 100 percent true for Kudos! We hand-select each item of clothing that goes into our shop with a focus on styles that are comfortable and easy to dress up or down. This is the style of clothing we love, and it fits with what many of the women in our community are looking for.

Inventory levels are much smaller at a clothing boutique.

While larger retailers carry a wide variety of clothing styles in a vast array of sizes, boutiques carry a limited amount of inventory and often do not restock items when they run out. At Kudos, each item of clothing we stock is ordered in limited quantities—two of each size. This helps us offer new selections regularly, while keeping you from seeing someone else in the same outfit when you go out!

Passion drives boutique owners.

Not to say that large retail companies don’t have founders and employees who are passionate about their products, but broad-based retailers are generally founded with a goal of creating a successful, nationwide business. Boutiques are typically founded by owners who are looking for a way to turn their passion into a profitable business that enhances their local community. This is definitely our mission at Kudos—read about our story here!

When you shop at Kudos, you’re supporting a local business founded by a mother and daughter who have a passion for things that make you smile, whether that’s a new, chic top for work or a cute succulent for your kitchen table. When you visit us, we hope you feel the joy we feel every time we walk through Kudo’s doors.
